September 21, 2018

John A. Schrader, 87, of Otisfield, died Friday, September 21, 2018, at Stephens Memorial Hospital in Norway.
He was born on Nov. 28, 1930, in Darien CT., a son of Frederick J. and Jane (McCullum) Schrader. He graduated from Darien High School in 1948 and attended the School of Agriculture at the University of Connecticut.
On July 10, 1955 he married Jacquelyn W. March, upon discharge from the Navy.  She predeceased him in 1992.
As a boy, John was active in 4H and Boy Scouts.  He lived and worked on his family’s farm and in heavy construction before serving in the Naval SeaBee’s during the Korean Conflict.  John had a long and varied career, including working for S. D. Warren, co-owning both the Bridgton and Naples Lobster Pounds and as caretaker of Camp Blazing Trail in Denmark.
John ran a dairy farm in Denmark for a time before going into the home building business, where he was co-owner of Building Fabricators in Saco.  John and his family also owned and operated Punkin Valley Inn in West Bridgton.  Upon selling Punkin Valley Inn, he continued doing odd jobs until his retirement in 2001, after moving to Otisfield in 2000.
John was an active member of his community.  He served on various boards in the town of Denmark.  He was also a member of the First Congregational Church of Bridgton where he served as usher and taught Sunday school with his wife.  He later joined Casco Village Church where he served in several different capacities.
He enjoyed eating out, reading, being outdoors, tinkering on old tractors, and most all, his family.
John is survived by his brother, Robert M. Schrader of Port St. Lucie, FL.; his three children, March Schrader of Hartford, CT., April Frank of Harrison and Lyn Richardson of Naples; one granddaughter, four grandsons, one great-grandson, and a longtime companion, Carolyn S. Marr.
A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 6, at the Casco Village Church, 942 Meadow Road, Casco.  Interment will be at a later date at the Adams Ponds Cemetery, Bridgton.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in John’s memory to the Good Shepherd Food Bank, PO Box 1807, Auburn, ME 04211.
